Joshua Oppenheimer on why America shouldn’t forget Indonesia’s mass killings

Is the past ever past? Joshua Oppenheimer’s 2012 documentary, “The Act of Killing,” investigated that question. Over the course of several years, the American filmmaker followed a group of Indonesian men as they reenacted their part in the anti-Communist massacres of 1965 and 1966. These men, former gangsters and militia members who killed with tacit government approval, wanted to commemorate what they saw as a proud moment in their lives. They reenacted how they had killed scores of people, playing both killers and victims in surreal shoots. Read more here.
