Participant & Magnolia Pictures Aquire ‘The Grab’ From ‘Blackfish’ Director Gabriela Coperthwaite
March 6, 2024 – Announced exclusively with Variety, Participant in partnership with Magnolia Pictures have jointly acquired The Grab, a new documentary thriller from Blackfish director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite.
The film, which had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows a team of journalists from The Center for Investigative Reporting as they uncover the money, influence and alarming rationale behind covert land grabs by some of the world’s most powerful countries. The story takes viewers from Arizona to Zambia as the moviemakers examine the food and water scarcity that’s resulting from this little-known power grab.
Courtney Sexton, Participant’s executive vice president, documentary film and television, expressed her excitement in her statement for Variety, “Gabriela’s masterful storytelling in ‘The Grab’ thrillingly opens our eyes about very real, and often unseen, national security and global threats, through the lens of The Center for Investigative Reporting’s startling investigation.”
Magnolia and Participant will debut the film in theaters and on demand on June 14.
