Film on Hunger in America Opens
One out of every two children today will be on food stamps at some point. Children are not hungry because of a shortage of food, but because of poverty. Those are some of the points made in “A Place at the Table,” a film that opens today that examines how hunger poses economic, social and cultural implications for the country. The directors of the documentary, Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, and the founder of Share Our Strength, Bill Shore, took part in a TimesTalk discussion this week about how they made the project. Also participating were the chef Tom Colicchio, who was the film’s executive producer, and Jeff Bridges, the actor and activist who appears in the film.
Mr. Bridges riffed on the power of his celebrity to bring attention to the cause. “The Dude wants to end childhood hunger,” he said, a reference to his character in the movie “The Big Lebowski.”
