‘Middle of Nowhere’ Social Action Campaign Victory: FCC Ends Predatory Prison Phone Rates

This morning, the FCC voted to put an end to predatory prison phone rates—a victory after a coalition’s decade of work. The Middle of Nowhere film, campaign and team played an instrumental role in this occasion. As as one woman put it this morning in front of the FCC

I found the Campaign for Prison Phone Justice via the writers and producers of the film
Middle of Nowhere. This was a life changing moment for me as the lead character was
impacted by expensive phone rates just like I was, because her husband was
incarcerated. I came home from that film and signed up for a graduate program
I had been putting off, and decided I would be an advocate to help the children.

Finding the Campaign for Phone Justice was a blessing and an opportunity for me to
help by supporting passage of the Wright petition and related rules. It’s amazing that
with this one item we can immediately help families like mine – innocent impacted
victims that have been taken advantage of during a time of loss, grief and
Desperation.
