Impact
The film proved that investigative journalism has the power to hold leaders accountable. The film reenergized a movement for institutional responsibility by redirecting global attention to the issue of abuse in the Catholic Church and offering community and resources for survivors.
After the film received the Oscar® for Best Picture, Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, then Archbishop of Boston, proclaimed Spotlight a landmark film “for all impacted by the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse.” The film’s impact was extended through the creation of the Spotlight Fellowship, which ran for five cycles between 2016 and 2020, awarding $500,000 in support of investigative journalism.
