Marina, a waitress and singer, and Orlando, an older man, are in love and planning for the future. After Orlando suddenly falls ill and dies, Marina is forced to confront his family and society, and to fight again to show them who she is: complex, strong, forthright, fantastic.

A Fantastic Woman‘s star Daniela Vega made history as the first openly transgender presenter at the Academy Awards® ceremony.
The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the first Oscar® for Chile. The win resulted in positive political pressure on Chile’s policy makers at a time when its government was considering legislation affecting transgender rights. According to The Atlantic, Chilean lawmakers who had opposed the bill publicly expressed their openness to passing the gender-identity legislation after the Oscars ceremony.
