ABOUT

There are millions of Cleos all over the world.

The most personal project to date from Academy Award®-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Y Tu Mamá También), Roma follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in Mexico City’s middle-class Roma neighborhood. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amid Mexico’s political turmoil of the 1970s. Roma marks Cuarón’s first project since the groundbreaking Gravity in 2013.

Our Impact

The Roma campaign sparked newfound attention and legislative change that bolstered the rights of domestic workers globally. Partnering with nonprofits leading the movement, including the National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) in the US and Centro de Apoyo y Capacitación para Empleadas del Hogar (CACEH) in Mexico, the campaign sparked a cultural conversation around the treatment and rights of domestic workers and inspired legislative change in both countries.

Landmark results include three specific legislative events: In May 2019, Mexico’s Congress passed CACEH’s legislation, which ensured 2.4M domestic workers have written contracts and benefits including paid time off. In July 2019, then Senator Kamala Harris and Representative Pramila Jayapal introduced the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights into the US Congress. And finally, in December 2019, Mexico’s President ratified the UN’s International Labor Organization c. 189, a treaty further solidifying labor rights, including access to social security and decent work conditions for domestic workers across the country.

Roma won 3 Academy Awards® in 2019, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director.

An indigenous domestic worker’s journey inspires this intimate yet universal portrait of family, memory and love. In Roma, Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón delivers a vivid, emotional portrait of a domestic worker, Cleo, which asks us to explore how we can make a difference for the women who care for our families, and our homes: the real-life Cleos everywhere.

70%

of domestic workers in the US are paid less than $13 per hour. 65% have no health insurance.

You can help improve working conditions for domestic workers.

Domestic workers are the unsung heroines of our childhoods and families. They are nannies, house cleaners, and care workers – mostly women of color and immigrants. Despite their important roles, their work often goes unrecognized and their industry unregulated. Take action and help us shift the narrative.
