In Dark Waters, Mark Ruffalo is out for environmental justice. The film, not to be confused with the 2005 horror film Dark Water, comes from Far From Heaven and Carol director Todd Haynes, and was inspired by a true story—specifically, the New York Times article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare". Ruffalo plays a corporate defense attorney—meaning he defends chemical firms for a living—who winds up filing an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company, exposing a long history of intentional pollution.
